VISITORS do not go to the Coffee Trap Bistro and Party for its coffee. Rather, many are drawn by its wide range of western and continental cuisine as well as its live entertainment.

HEARTY MEAL: A customer ready to tuck in.
Located at Jalan Permas 10/2 at Bandar Baru Permas Jaya in Johor Baru, the bistro, which provides alfresco dining, is popular among both locals and expatriates.

A Briton, who works as an engineer in Pasir Gudang, forgot the name of the cafe after his first visit two months ago.

When he told a taxi driver to bring him to a place with alfresco dining and live entertainment, he was sent to Coffee Trap.

Coffee Trap's grilled salmon and lamb shank are among the top sellers.

The salmon is perfectly grilled and sprinkled with deep-fried minced garlic in olive oil.

The garlic is generous in portion and it adds extra aroma and flavour to the salmon without needing any sauce.

It is served with green broccoli, cauliflower, potato with sour cream, mushroom and carrot, and garnished with parsley, making it a relatively healthy dish for all age groups.

For those who like lamb, Coffee Trap's lamb shank is a signature dish.

Restaurant manager Mohd Khir Rafie said it is a favourite dish among the men due to its large serving.

"Even for those who do not like lamb, it will totally change their perception after the first try," he said.

The lamb shank is stewed with celery, onions and carrots and other secret ingredients and spices for at least three hours to produce the thick gravy.

The lamb shank and gravy is served atop a big portion of mashed potatoes.

The meat is lean, tender and soft while the gravy with the special flavour goes well with the mashed potatoes.

Mohd Khir said many types of vegetables were used to prepare the gravy to balance up the heaty lamb shank.

Coffee Trap's fish and chips is an all-time favourite. The fish is snapper which goes well with the specially-made mayonnaise sauce. The chips are crispy outside and soft inside.

It tastes good on its own without the need for tomato or chilli sauce.

Diners may choose to have squid, fish fingers or prawns fritters to accompany the dish.

While enjoying meals, in-house band Billy Lee, Fast and Diana will entertain diners with a wide repertoire of English, Malay and Chinese songs.

Coffee Trap opens from 5pm to 3am . Close on Monday unless its a eve of Public Holiday
